Costa Rica expedition itinerary

The Costa Rica independent expedition is made up of four different expedition phases. Take a look at the expedition itinerary below.

Acclimatisation
There is a range of places to complete acclimatisation treks in Costa Rica, such as the Monteverde Cloudforest Reserve, or the Rincon de la Vieja National Park which, due to mild volcanic activity, offers hot springs and bubbling mud pools. Lake Arenal also provides another great location for an initial trekking phase; at night you might see Volcán Arenal gently erupting in the distance. Alternatively teams may acclimatise within the wildlife rich Amistad International Park in Southern Costa Rica.

Main trekking phase
Both Cerro Ena (3126m) in Costa Rica’s Talamanca range and Volcán Baru (3478m) in Panama’s Chiriquí Highlands provide exciting high altitude challenges with great views. For a steamy 5 day rainforest trek, teams can cross the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica from Puerto Jimenez to the Corcovado National Park. This provides a unique chance to get up close to a huge array of flora and fauna – from bromeliads to sloths, monkeys, peccaries, coati-mundis, macaws and frogs.

Project
Community-based projects in Costa Rica usually involve basic construction or agricultural tasks; cultural interaction is a very important aspect of such projects.  There is also a fantastic turtle conservation project on the Caribbean coast, so remote that it can only be reached by boat through the jungle lagoons.

Rest and relaxation
There are numerous opportunities for rest and relaxation activities throughout the expedition: white-water rafting, canopy walks and zip-wiring are particularly popular. Teams usually decide to spend their last couple of days in Costa Rica relaxing on a beach - either on the palm fringed Caribbean coast or the more rugged Pacific side.

This is a sample itinerary that may be subject to some change depending on local conditions, contact us for more information.
