Madagascar expedition Expedition to Madagascar Madagascar expeditions Madagascar expedition

The Madagascar independent expedition is made up of four different expedition phases. Take a look at the expedition itinerary phases below.

1. Acclimatisation phase
There are plenty of opportunities to do short day treks in areas such as the Andasibe-Mantadia National Park as well as Lake Tritriva and Lake Andraikiba which offer a great chance to experience the local culture in villages on the way. Teams can also trek to Ranomafana National Park offering a huge variety of trails that take you through cloud forest and rolling hills.

2. Main trekking phase

Teams could explore the stunning Andringitra National Park in the eastern side of southern Madagascar The park has spectacular views of huge granite peaks, the highest of which, Pic Imarivolanitra, at 2658m, is the second highest in the country. The park has over 100km of trails to explore and much to see with over 30 species of orchids, 14 species of lemur and hosts a mass of treasures including the sacred waterfalls.
There are also trekking options in central southern Madagascar, in Isalo National Park. Isalo is described as ‘savagely beautiful’ and ‘otherworldly’. Plateaus, canyons, golden plains, pinnacles and waterfalls characterise this impressive landscape.

The Highlands around Fianarantsoa offer the chance to get truly off the beaten track, trekking from village to village through rice paddies, fields, and rainforests.  On route you can haggle for fresh supplies and gain a unique insight in to rural life in Madagascar.

3. Project
The project phase will generally run for a week to ten days and offers the opportunity to become fully immersed in the local environment and the wonderfully rich Malagasy culture. World Challenge has links with local NGOs and environmental agencies which have provided the opportunity for teams to get involved in worthwhile projects in the past.

4. Rest and relaxation
With many beautiful coastal areas to choose from, teams will have plenty of opportunity to relax and recuperate on the beach or soak up a little of Madagascar’s exotic past in the ancient coastal towns.

This is a sample itinerary that may be subject to some change depending on local conditions, contact us for more information.
