What our expedition costs cover – under 18
If you are under 18 your expedition build up will differ from groups that are over 18. Below are the details of what will be included in a typical under 18 expedition. Also noted is how these features differ to what is included for over 18s.
World Challenge independent expedition costs vary between destinations, month of travel, age and itinerary. Call us for an exact price for your chosen expedition.
Flights
Flights are included for the under 18s (the cost of the flight isn’t automatically included for over 18s)
In-country costs
Includes expedition members and Leaders’ transport and food in-country, accommodation, guides’ fees, park fees, airport taxes, local equipment purchase or hire and other in-country costs specific to the expedition, e.g. in-country agent fees.
Expedition group equipment
Includes expedition specific equipment such as tents, ropes, harnesses, medical supplies (antibiotics, dressings, splints etc.) freeze-dried rations, safety equipment and suitable satellite communication equipment.
Insurance (medical)
Includes 24-hour back-up from the Operations Centre, all medical treatment until return to country of origin, search and rescue and casualty evacuation for all team members.
Training
Includes the training, fundraising advice and expedition preparation meeting - compulsory prior to departure. (This is not included for over 18s, only the build-up day).
Preparation
Includes all online resources, expedition handbooks, destination research, training, and medical clearance and pre-expedition build-up day at Brunel University and transport to the airport. (Over 18s meet directly at the airport with no build-up day or transport to the airport).
Leaders and Expedition Assistants
Under 18 expeditions have a main Expedition Leader and an Expedition Assistant. (Over 18 expeditions only have an Expedition Leader). All of our Expedition Leaders are highly trained and experienced outdoor practitioners and we invest a great deal in their professional development. All their payments and training are included in the cost.
Medical assistance
We are associated with an international medical assistance agency who support the Operations Centre and is available 24-hours a day.
What the cost does not cover
- Vaccinations
- Visas (if required)
- Personal equipment (and personal equipment insurance)
- Transport within the UK (to and from the training and selection course, to the build-up day venue near the airport, from the airport on return to the UK)
- Optional rest and relaxation activities on expedition, as specified in the itinerary.
