Acclimatisation phase
First of all, teams head to Kochi, a historic town with visible remnants of its Portuguese, Dutch and English past. You’ll acclimatise by completing a day walk, taking in some of the ancient mosques, synagogues and other sites of cultural importance.
Main trekking phase
The trekking phase consists of a 5 - 6 day trekking phase in the green hills of the Western Ghats, around Munnar. Trek through forests, lakes, tea plantations and spice-growing regions where you can learn about the various spices and how they are used in the area. The trek then moves on through local villages, where you’ll get a unique insight into the Keralan way of life.
Project work in Kerala
Expedition members then take part in a 7 day volunteer project phase in Kerala. You can work in either in a rural school, orphanage or take part in environmental work in a national park. Activities are likely to include painting classrooms, mending furniture or painting murals. Basic construction work may also be required, such as building and plastering brick walls or constructing a playground for the children.
Rest and relaxation phase
Spend some time relaxing on the Keralan backwaters. You and your team can take a houseboat (Kettuvallam) on the intricate system of rivers, lagoons, coconut groves and paddy fields. Enjoy an unusually laidback peaceful way of Indian life!
