Acclimatisation phase
Several short day treks out of Manali and Leh can be done before the main trekking phase. These can incorporate visits to temples and monasteries and other places of cultural importance.
Main trekking phase
The expedition team will take a flight to the town of Leh deep in the India Himalayas for the main trekking phase.
Lake Tso Moriri trek: New in 2009, this is a demanding and remote trek that stays consistently above 4000m. Starting the trek from Lake Tso Moriri far south of Leh and ending at Rumtse in central Ladakh, you will ascend rocky passes of up to 5449m, pass nomad settlements, numerous lakes and walk across wide and open pasture surrounded by splendid rocky hillsides and snow-capped peaks where a dramatic view of Kang Yatze dominates the distance.
Markha Valley trek: This is a 10-12 day trek in one of the most remote trekking valleys of the Indian Himalaya. Starting from Spituk, this is a stunning circular route in the Markha Valley, traversing passes of up to 5000m. The route passes through the lush Zingchen Valley where the Rumbak River meets the mighty Indus and flows into a canyon. Trekking through Hemis National Park may offer a glimpse of rare and endangered wildlife, such as snow leopard, Ladakhi Urial (a type of goat) and Bharal (blue sheep).
Project
Projects are usually carried out in schools in and around the town of Leh. Teams help with maintenance work, painting murals, fixing buildings or general odd jobs with plenty of opportunity for interaction with local villagers and children.
Rest and relaxation
Few people visit India without going to see the Red Fort in Delhi and the magnificent Taj Mahal in Agra and depending on the progress of the trek, your last few days in India can be spent seeing some of its main tourist attractions. White water rafting is also possible around Leh, if you’re still feeling adventurous.
This is a sample itinerary that may be subject to some change depending on local conditions, contact us for more information.
